Fulbright Scholarships

Basic Information

The prestigious Fulbright Program sponsored by U.S. and Czech governments provides U.S. and Czech citizens with the opportunity to study, teach, or conduct research in the partner country.

The Fulbright Program is open to all fields be it Liberal Arts or Hard Sciences (except for MBA, LLM and Clinical Medicine).

The primary criterion for selection in all programs is the quality of the candidate and their project. In all programs (with comparable project qualities), preference will be given to candidates who have not previously had the opportunity to stay long-term in the Czech Republic. Fulbright Commission scholarships in the Czech Republic primarily serve to establish new contacts and are not intended as a source of funding for existing collaborations. An important aspect is also the disciplinary, professional, and local diversity of selected candidates and their host institutions.

The initial screening and first round of selections is administered by IIE. Following this, the semifinalists are sent messages informing them about their status and the Czech Fulbright Commission receives the semifinalists ´applications. Selection committees for individual programs, which are composed of members of the Board of Directors subsequently select finalists for each program. The selection committee submits nominations to the Board of Directors. The Board of Directors gives consent to nominations, taking into account the selection committee’s recommendations, available financial resources, and other program requirements.

Final approval for all grants is given by the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board (FFSB), appointed by the President of the United States and located in Washington. As a federal administrative body, FFSB is required to comply with U.S. government guidelines. In the final confirmation of individual nominations, FFSB ensures that projects and their topics are aligned with Administration priorities, including executive orders issued by the President of the United States. Thus, a situation may arise where, despite a positive nomination by the Fulbright Commission Board in the Czech Republic, a project may not be approved by FFSB. There is no appeal against this decision.
