Fulbright Scholarships for Students

The selection procedure for the Fulbright Program for U.S. students is administered by our partner, the Institute of International Education. U.S. candidates should apply through this organization, however the Fulbright Commission in the Czech Republic is prepared to assist in locating research contacts or discussing the feasibility of projects.

Fulbright Full Grants for U.S. Students

The U.S. Student Program offers opportunities for recent graduates, postgraduate candidates, and developing professionals and artists to study and conduct career-launching research in the Czech Republic. Advanced graduate students capable of working independently are preferred. Applicants should have some experience in the proposed field of study.

Knowledge of Czech is essential for successful completion of specific study plans (e.g., studies of Czech language, literature, history) or programs in Czech.

The Czech academic year has two semesters: usually mid-September through January, and February through mid-June. The Fulbright Commission organizes a one-week orientation in mid- September and a mid-year conference in early February. Attendance at these events is mandatory.

The Fulbright Commission can assist in establishing contacts with appropriate institutions if needed. If students apply for programs at Czech universities (i.e., they do not propose an independent research project), they should apply for regular programs with Czech as the language of instruction. Applicants in the creative and performing arts must submit a letter of support from their prospective tutor or host institution. The Commission can also provide assistance in securing professional advice. Apart from Charles University, there are comparable opportunities for independent study and research at all Czech institutions of higher education in and outside of Prague, such as in Plzen, Ceske Budejovice, Liberec, Usti nad Labem, Ostrava, Opava, Olomouc, Brno, and at the institutions of the Czech Academy of Sciences.

In case of independent research, applicants must present evidence of consultation with relevant scholars in the Czech Republic regarding the feasibility of their proposed projects and the availability of related resources.  Letters of support from Czech scholars must be included in the application.

Small dependent allowance is available.
